I’ve Been Accepted to FIDM! + My Accepted FIDM Entrance Project

Hey y’all — so those photos I posted last week were actually for this application!

I’m super excited to share that I’ve been accepted to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles! As sad as I’ll be to leave San Francisco after graduation, I can’t be more excited to start this new chapter in my life. Most of my friends and family know that fashion is the path I really want to go down and applying to FIDM was my way of giving myself that push I needed to learn more about what I love. I’ve always contemplated about applying/attending FIDM for years, even when I was applying for colleges back in 2016-2017. I do enjoy my current communications major now in SF, but I didn’t want to live my life never have attending a fashion school where I can get that hands on experience I really want. However, I am very grateful for the skills I’ve learned in my communications major because fashion and communications can go hand in hand!

With that being said, I’m sharing with y’all my entrance portfolio project and my application experience and more!

What I’ll Be Majoring In

When applying to FIDM, I was in such awe by the number of majors you can choose from. There were so many topics that I didn’t even know could be college majors. They range from fashion design to beauty business management. When you start seriously applying to FIDM, you are given an advisor who helps you through the application process the entire time. They are there to not only help, but to make sure FIDM is the right fit for you. They even take into account if the major you are applying for is right for you. If you question what you want to do, they’ll introduce you to other courses that seem more fitting for what you are looking for. Also, your advisors get to know you really well and it was actually one of my favorite parts of the process. I was really stuck between wanting to apply for Merchandising and Marketing or Visual Communications. My advisor got to know me very well and could tell i wanted to go more the stylist route and suggested Visual communications, which is what I will be applying for!

Visual Communications focuses on styling outfits, photoshoots, sets, etc. This major is also very broad in the sense that it can go into styling literally anything. I however will be focusing on fashion styling for my courses.

Application Process

DISCLAIMER: I applied during COVID so my process was all virtual and past or future experiences may be very different.

I’m sharing this because I think this can be useful and helpful to anyone who was thinking about attending FIDM. I know when I was applying I was searching the internet for other peoples experiences!

So, applying to FIDM is not very traditional from most colleges. It’s very different but I actually enjoyed the process because it made me feel like I was applying for a big industry job.

What They Ask For:

  • Transcripts From College and Highschool
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • An Essay
  • Portfolio

They obviously ask for the general information but what makes it different is the portfolio and the interview process. In the process you have to go through two interviews. One is in the very beginning stages of applying and it’s mainly an overview of the courses they offer and to get to know you better so they can help you on what path you should go on. After that they give you an advisor who helps you along the way. Also, if you are thinking about applying to FIDM, really really reach out to your advisor! They are the kindest and most helpful people and it’s what they are there for. They will literally help you with anything and even call you if you’re feeling stressed out. I really enjoyed the closeness I had with my advisor. The second interview is the last interview. This is going to sound so nerve-wracking, but on the second interview they actually tell you on the spot if you are accepted or not. I know it sounds so intense and I was getting really in my head about it, but like everyone else said; It’s not that bad!

The last interview is talking to the head of admissions and they ask you about yourself, your project, and your essay. They also interview you to see if the major you are applying for suits you. I was so nervous because my phone interview was at the end of the day and I had to sit during zoom classes worrying about what was going to happen. The interview went so well and at the end of it they congratulated me and told me I was accepted and it was the best feeling ever!

If you’re thinking about applying, at the end of the day, you will get accepted if the school can see you are driven and passionated in what you are applying for. Also, the application is mainly meant to represent you and who you are. If you be yourself throughout the whole process then you’re chilling.

My Entrance Portfolio

Finally here is my project! I was very nervous for this step of the application because I was thinking to myself that I don’t actually have a portfolio of “my work.” I was taking the word “portfolio” so literal it was stressing me out. I called my advisor for some help and she told me it’s meant to reflect myself so the admissions team gets to know me. She also said it doesn’t even have to relate to the major I was applying for. Also, keep in mind, my major is very broad so this is why my portfolio guidelines were very broad. I know for certain majors the portfolio project has different directions!

My advisor knew I had a blog and told me I could really use it for my project. I took that advice because I thought, what better way to know me than through my blog!

What I created for my project, was an Aundra branding guide! It also touches on the future of my blog and where I eventually see it. I linked it here to share with you all and I hope you love it as much as I do!

CHECK IT OUT!
